Honoring the Memory of Neil Armstrong

Where were you on July 20, 1969 when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the surface of the Moon? As I've blogged before, I was at the Boy Scout National Jamboree in Idaho. Due to the limits of technology in 1969 and our remote location, we were not able to watch the Moon landing live. We saw Armstrong's "giant leap for mankind" 24 hours later by tape-delay and broadcast on a huge outdoor screen to all of the Scouts in attendance at the Jamboree.  (Maybe Mary Ellyn can post a comment below on where she was on that historic occasion.)

As everyone now knows, Neil Armstrong passed away on August 25, 2012. President Obama has ordered the flag of the United States lowered to half-staff until sunset on Friday, August 31, 2012 to honor the memory of Neil Armstrong.

From President Obama's official proclamation:
As a mark of respect for the memory of Neil Armstrong, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that on the day of his interment, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on such day. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.
We'll be flying our U.S. Flag tomorrow on our front porch in honor of Armstrong.

Here's a brief statement by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder:
With one small step, Neil Armstrong touched the lives of people across our country and the globe, inspiring citizens of all ages by transforming what was once only imagined into reality. His legacy of service, remarkable vision and innovative spirit will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with his entire family during this time.

Neil Armstrong, Remembered

  1. I was with my family on our summer camping trip. We were either on our way home to Michigan or on our way out west. I can't remember. We spent the night at Cutty's KOA in Iowa. I remember being in a room with lots of other campers watching the TV. It was SO EXCITING!
