Attending the 2016 One Stop Ready Academy

Over the past few months I attended Oakland County's One Stop Ready Academy. The Academy is designed to educate Oakland County local government staff, elected and appointed officials about this "community focused economic development program built upon self-evaluation, information sharing, and outstanding customer service."

I attended the 3 sessions that were offered this year in the evening on June 22, July 27, and September 28. Not sure I'll be able to use the training in my capacity as a Troy Zoning Board of Appeals member. But, it was still a worthwhile educational opportunity.

Troy Zoning Board of Appeals - September 2016 Meeting Recap

City staff has posted the video recording of the 9/20/16 Troy Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) meeting to YouTube. At the bottom of this post is the video. (The meeting actually starts shortly after the 1 minute mark of the video.)

Click here to download the entire Agenda Packet from the September 20th meeting.

There were two items on the agenda:
  • A variance for 1941 French Creek (to construct a roofed patio enclosure). The ZBA voted to approve the variance. I voted yes.

  • A variance for 2116 Brinston (to to allow an addition to a nonconforming pool deck). The ZBA voted to postpone action on this variance until our October meeting. I voted yes on the motion to postpone.

Using Social Media for Local News

It seems to me that most social media coverage of politics and current events has a national and international focus. Instead, it should be better used for coverage of local and community news. For example, see the posts below that I shared on Facebook and Twitter tonight (9/19/16).

How soon will you read about this in the local news? Probably not until this coming Thursday (9/22/16) in the Troy Times. You sure won't see it on TV or read about it in one of the major daily newspapers.
