Support Your Michigan Winery

Approximately once every three years, we take an adults-only vacation with Mary Ellyn's parents, siblings and their spouses. This year's trip was to Southwest Michigan to visit several excellent wineries. In our humble opinion, Michigan wines are some of the best in the USA ... maybe even the entire planet.

There were two highlights to our visit. On Friday afternoon we visited St. Julian Winery in Paw Paw. I've become a Facebook friend with Nancie Corum Oxley, one of the winemakers at St. Julian. While Nancie was busy with harvesting and crushing grapes, she arranged for St. Julian Winery Assistant Manager Laura to host our visit. Of course, when we discovered that there was a sparkling wine named for Nancie (Sweet Nancie), we had to purchase a bottle.

While St. Julian is one of the oldest and largest wineries in Michigan, one of the newest and smallest is Old Shore Vineyards, near Buchanan. On Saturday, our entire family had the pleasure of taking a tour of their vineyard and tasting their excellent wines. We were hosted by Dannielle and David Maki, the husband and wife owners of this winery. Because they have a small operation, you need an appointment to visit their vineyard. But, if you plan on being in the area, by all means call ahead to schedule an appointment.
