Volunteering at Troy Athens High School 2011-2012

Troy Athens Choir Trip to Mackinaw City
Our son Alex just finished up his Freshman year at Troy Athens High School.  In addition to his academics, he was very involved sports, music, and theater.  Last August, little did we know that our lives would get busier with a student in high school. We enjoy volunteering but assumed that there weren't that many volunteer opportunities for parents. Wow, we were wrong.

Mary Ellyn helping with the set-up for the All Night Party
For example, Mary Ellyn discovered the S.H.A.P.E. program (Students Having Access to Parents and Educators) at Athens.  This program provides "one-on-one" assistance to students in the areas of reading tests, paraphrasing test questions, help with homework, completing class projects, and providing encouragement. Generally, Mary Ellyn worked with students on Friday mornings.

Here's a list of our other Athens volunteer activities over the 2011-2012 academic year:
  • Helped serve a meal before one of the Cross Country meets
  • Helped with a meal during Theater Tech week for Little Shop of Horrors
  • Drove Cross-Country team members to pre-season running events
  • Helped build the Theater set for Little Shop of Horrors
  • Set up for Seniors All Night Party
  • Worked the concessions at Little Shop of Horrors
  • Worked the concessions for the Athletic Boosters
  • Helped with the parking lot patrol at the Senior Prom
  • Chaperoned the Choir trip to Mackinaw City
We're looking forward to additional volunteering opportunities during the 2012-2013 academic year at Athens.
