Economic Gardening Comes to Troy

Good to read that the City of Troy is adopting "economic gardening." Economic gardening is an "entrepreneurial approach to economic development that seeks to grow the local economy from within." Click here to read more.

According to a 3/20/12 Troy Times article by C & G staff writer Terry Oparka...
Troy Economic Development specialist Glenn Lapin, who came on board with the city in November, said his focus is on economic “gardening,” rather than “hunting.”

He explained that communities are dealing with economic development differently than they did in the past, when a “hunting” approach was used. That approach, he explained, is expensive and often went hand in hand with state tax breaks and other incentives, such as the Brownfield Redevelopment Credit, which are no longer available.

“We’re really focused on economic ‘gardening,’ in which you cultivate existing businesses to help them grow,” he said.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder is a major proponent of economic gardening. Check out the YouTube video below.
