City staff has posted the video recording of the 7/19/16 Troy Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) meeting to YouTube. At the bottom of this post is the video.

Click here to download the entire Agenda Packet from the July 19th meeting.

There was only one item on the agenda:
  • A variance for 1321 Boyd (to split a parcel of land into 2 parcels). The ZBA voted to deny the variance. I voted "no" on the motion to deny the variance.

Republican Party Deconversions

I received an email from the Michigan Republican Party yesterday reminding me that "162 years ago today, the Republican Party was formed under the oaks in Jackson, Michigan."

In the past, I was an active Republican. I served as Treasurer of the Oakland County GOP, a Troy GOP precinct delegate, and even as Chairman of the Michigan Young Republicans.

But, with the passage of time, I can relate to a recent article Political Deconversions written by Rod Dreher.

Dreher describes his "deconversion" from the GOP:
So I have been politically homeless since at least 2008, and expect I will be for the rest of my life. So why do I still call myself a conservative? Because I am not a progressive, and I mostly reject liberalism (in the sense that both mainstream parties are liberal), though any reader of this blog knows that I have a lot of internal contradictions around this that I need to work out. Basically, I believe in Russell Kirk’s Ten Principles of Conservative Thought. I identify with a strain of rightist thought Philip Blond has called Red Toryism. I don’t see them instantiated in either party. It is fairly silly to call oneself a conservative but to feel no particular affinity for the more conservative of the two parties.

Troy Zoning Board of Appeals - June 2016 Meeting Recap

City staff has posted the video recording of the 6/21/16 Troy Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) meeting to YouTube. At the bottom of this post is the video. (The meeting actually starts shortly after the 40 second mark of the video.)

Click here to download the entire Agenda Packet from the June 21st meeting.

There were five items on the agenda:
  • A variance for 1321 Boyd (to split a parcel of land into 2 parcels). The ZBA voted on a resolution to deny the variance. I voted to deny the variance but it failed to pass. The ZBA then voted to postpone action on this item to our July meeting.

  • A variance for 6511 Malvern (to construct a new home). The ZBA approved the variance. I voted to approve the variance.

  • A variance for 1876 Smallbrook (to build a new uncovered attached deck). The ZBA approved the variance. I voted to approve the variance.

  • A variance for 196 Chopin (to build a detached garage). The ZBA approved the variance. I voted to approve the variance.

  • A variance for 1078 Boyd (to split a parcel of land into 2 parcels). The ZBA denied the variance. I voted with the majority to deny the variance.
Also, congratulations to Paul McCown who was recently "promoted" to the Board from his former position as an alternate.
