Prayer for a Year Ending

This fall we purchased a wonderful book called The Treasury of Daily Prayer.

The prayer for December 31....

Eternal God, we commit to Your mercy and forgiveness the year now ending and commend to Your blessing and love the times yet to come.  In the new year,  abide among us with Your Holy Spirit that we may always trust in the saving name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen

Happy New Year 2009!

Building an Americanization Movement for the 21st Century

On June 7, 2006, President Bush established the "Task Force on New Americans," with a call to strengthen the efforts of the Department of Homeland Security and federal, state, and local agencies to help legal immigrants embrace the common core of American civic culture, learn our common language, and fully become Americans.

Why Not a Biggby Coffee on Big Beaver?

The December 29 edition of the Troy-Somerset Gazette features an article entitled "Council Gives Approval for Urban Design on Big Beaver."  The article states that this new development on Big Beaver "will result in two Tim Horton’s restaurants located within about a mile of each other." In addition to the one proposed for this site, another site is already under construction on Rochester Road just north of Big Beaver.

I've got to wonder why the developer wants to place a Tim Hortons within such close proximity to another one?  Did the developer ever think about a Biggby Coffee?  I can just think of all the great co-marketing opportunities between "Biggby Coffee" and "Big Beaver."

Where's Our Troy Eccentric?

In another weather-related incident, our Troy Eccentric failed to appear in our driveway today.  When I tried calling the circulation department, the automated voice mail system was not accepting messages.

Another DTE Power Outage

Due to the windy weather, we lost electricity today for around two to three hours. This is the third time in seven months that we've lost power.

The Biblical Meaning of Christmas

As we drove to Lansing today we listened to a podcast from Fighting for the Faith titled  The Biblical Meaning of Christmas.

Chris Rosebrough of Pirate Christian Radio began the Christmas story way back in Genesis 1:1

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth".

He traced the story through Genesis 3:15, (and the first promise of the Star of Bethlehem)

"And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush  your head,
and you will strike his heel."

and then to the birth of Jesus in the familiar story in the New Testament.   He walked us through Luke's account of the birth of John the Baptist and Jesus.  Finally he took us to the cross.  We heard Law and Gospel clear as a bell on Christmas morn.

Red Roof Inn Armed Robbery Update

News release from the Troy Police...

Armed Robberies:

2350 Rochester Ct. – Red Roof Inn – On Friday December 12, 2008, at approximately 6:57 p.m. A male subject entered the lobby of the Red Roof Inn described as in his 30’s, 5’7”, medium build, mustache, wearing blue jeans, and blue hoodie with strings drawn to only show his eyes to his mouth and asked for a double room. When the attendant asked what method he was going to pay for the room the suspect pulled out a silver and black hand gun and pointed it at her stating “with this!” The motel worker told the suspect to take the money at which time he went around the counter and ordered her to give him the money. When she refused the suspect opened two drawers, where he found cash and took approximately $ 300.00 placing it in his left pocket. The suspect ordered the attendant to lie on the ground at which time she stated “I’m not going to get on the ground so you can kill me.” The suspect then asked where the drop box was and the attendant pointed to a large safe and stated she did not know how to open it. The suspect started to exit and told the attendant that if she called the Police he would kill her. The motel worker stated that the suspect was extremely forceful with his language and his physical contact with her. The camera system had been broken for 2 days and there is no video of the armed robbery.

Troy Police Department Detectives have received investigative leads from the Madison Hts. Police department who responded to a suspicious circumstance on December 10, 2008, at the Fairfield Inn on Stephenson Hwy. where the management of this establishment felt that two suspicious individuals were casing their motel for a possible robbery. The one individual was in an area of the motel that was off limits to non-customers and when asked to leave this subject became argumentative with a Fairfield Inn employee. Our Detectives obtained photos from their security camera and the suspect matched the description given at the Troy Red Roof Inn armed robbery on December 12th. The suspect was seen leaving the motel in a red Ford Explorer or possibly Mercury Mountaineer.

Other Armed Robberies:

December 3, 2008, at approximately 1:00 a.m. an armed robbery took place at the Comfort Suites on Updyke in Auburn Hills. The suspect’s description and method of operation was similar to the Troy Red Roof Inn robbery.

December 17, 2008, at approximately 7:40 p.m. an armed robbery took place at the Extended Stay on Featherstone in Auburn Hills. The suspect’s description and method of operation was similar to the Troy Red Roof Inn robbery.

Positive Identification:

Based upon the photos obtained from the Madison Hts. Fairfield Inn security camera the victim of the Troy Red Roof Inn robbery has made positive identification of the suspect that committed the robbery at gun point. We also have a witness from the Auburn Hills Extended Stay armed robbery who has identified the same person who was involved in their robbery on December 17, 2008. Attached please find photos of the suspect who is a person of interest in multiple armed robberies in the immediate area. Anyone who can identify this individual should contact the Troy Police Department at 248-524-3477 or Detective Larry Schehr at 248-524-3455.

Media Questions should be directed to Lt. Chuck Pappas. Cell-248-885-2080.

Oh, Come, Oh, Come, Emmanuel

My favorite Advent song. We've sung it at each of this year's Wednesday evening Advent services at Our Shepherd Lutheran!

The author is unknown and it was probably written c. 1100. It was translated by John M. Neale. It's Hymn #357 #62 from the Lutheran Service Book Hymnal and the text is from Isaiah (59:20). In Latin, it is titled "Veni, veni, Emmanuel."

1. Oh, come, Oh, come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

2. Oh, come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save
And give them victory o'er the grave.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

3. Oh, come, Thou Dayspring from on high,
And cheer us by Thy drawing nigh;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

4. Oh, come, Thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heavenly home:
Make safe the way that leads on high
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Hanukkah and Judas Maccabeus

Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is the eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. More than twenty-one centuries ago, the Holy Land was ruled by the Seleucids (Syrian-Greeks), who sought to forcefully Hellenize the people of Israel. Against all odds, a small band of faithful Jews defeated one of the mightiest armies on earth, drove the Greeks from the land, reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and rededicated it to the service of God.

Judas Maccabeus (or Judah Maccabee, also spelled Machabeus, or Maccabaeus) was the third son of the Jewish priest Mattathias. He led the revolt against the Seleucid Empire and is acclaimed as one of the greatest warriors in Jewish history alongside Joshua, Gideon and David.

Christless Christianity?

According to Michael S. Horton...

Here we are in the North American church—conservative or liberal, evangelical or mainline, Protestant or Catholic, emergent or otherwise—cranking along just fine, thank you. So we’re busy downsizing, becoming culturally relevant, reaching out, drawing in, making disciples, managing the machinery, utilizing biblical principles, celebrating recovery, user-friendly, techno savvy, finding the purposeful life, practicing peace with justice, utilizing spiritual disciplines, growing in self-esteem, reinventing ourselves as effective ecclesiastical entrepreneurs, and, in general, feeling ever so much better about our achievements. Notice anything missing in this pretty picture? Jesus Christ! Jesus Christ indeed.

Why the Big 3 Qualify for Money from Bailout Fund

Today's Detroit News features a commentary by John Palffy that makes sense:

President George W. Bush is considering using the special financial industry bailout fund to bail out the Big Three automakers. United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger, while dead wrong about the UAW not needing to make significant further concessions, is right that creditors should come to the table, too. While it is expected that debt restructuring and creditor forgiveness will be a big part of this winter's proposed "restructuring" of the domestic automakers -- General Motors Corp., Chrysler LLC and possibly Ford Motor Co. -- it is not too soon to address GM's staggering negative book value of more than $60 billion...

Who Will Bail Out Uncle Sam?

According to an article in the Washington Examiner:

The United States of America is bankrupt. Don’t believe it? Consider this: Federal obligations now exceed the collective net worth of all Americans, according to the New York-based Peter G. Peterson Foundation. Washington politicians and bureaucrats have essentially mortgaged everything We the People own so they can keep spending our tax dollars like there’s no tomorrow...

Hey Mitch: How About a Little Courage?

Mitch Albom must think he’s being brave because he condemns some U.S. Senators from states other than Michigan. For example, read his column entitled “Hey, you senators: Thanks for nothing” at http://www.freep.com/article/20081213/COL01/81213055/?imw=Y

I’d have a lot more respect for Albom if he’d aim some of his anger at all of the parties at last week’s negotiations. Why nothing negative to say about maybe the UAW? Well, you see, if he blames the UAW for any of this, it might lose him and the Detroit Free Press some potential readers. However, there will be no repercussions if he blames a US Senator from Tennessee or Alabama.

For another point of view, read what Larry Kudlow has to say…

...Well, following the breakdown of an arduous seven-hour Senate negotiating session on Thursday night, many are asking, “Who lost the U.S. car business?” Right after the UAW vetoed a compromise, bankruptcy-lite, Detroit-little-three rescue plan put together by Tennessee Republican Bob Corker, UAW president Ron Gettelfinger played the blame game by blasting Corker and the Republican party for “singling out” union workers to shoulder the burden of reviving the U.S. car business. In truth, the UAW is to blame. If Sen. Corker’s plan had prevailed, with UAW support, many believe it would have had 90 votes in the Senate. GM could have gone forward with a clean-as-a-whistle balance sheet under a three-part restructuring plan that included a $60 billion bond-refinancing cram-down, a renegotiation of the $30 billion VEBA health-care trust, and a pay-restructuring plan that would put Detroit compensation levels in line with those of foreign transplants Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and BMW...

Is the Big 3 Bailout a Partisan Issue?

In spite of the "best" efforts of local media outlets here in Southeast Michigan to make it look that way, this is not a partisan issue.  As I told my daughter tonight, this is a region vs. region issue.  Many people outside the industrial Midwest (of both parties) are overwhelmingly opposed to the proposed bridge loan.

UDM Micro Final Is Done

My UDM Microeconomics final exam was last night.  I think I did fine.  I'll have to wait for the grade to be posted before I know for sure.

I really enjoyed this class taught by Professor Harry Veryser.  In fact, he'll be the instructor for my next class which is Macroeconomics.

I can tell you that my understanding of the "Austrian School of Economics" is growing with each class that I take at UDM.

Presidential Message: Eid al-Adha, 2008

I send greetings to Muslims around the world celebrating Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice.

Eid al-Adha commemorates Abraham's devotion to God, and it reminds us of God's mercy and provision for his people. Abraham's deep faith was tested when God asked him to sacrifice his son. Although Abraham was set to faithfully obey, God provided an alternate sacrifice that spared his son. During this holiday, Muslims around the world honor Abraham's trust in God and celebrate God's love through acts of charity and joyous feasts with family, friends, and others in their community.

Our Nation is blessed by vibrant Muslim communities. On this holiday, all Americans celebrate our religious liberty, and we remember that religious freedom belongs not to any one nation but to the world.

Laura and I send our best wishes for a blessed holiday.

GOP Delegates Censure Councilwoman Kerwin

According to Troy Eccentric reporter Steve Kowalski...

Troy City Councilwoman Mary Kerwin, a Republican precinct delegate, has been censured by a Republican caucus for her alleged support of Democrat candidates.

Even though I'm a Republican Precinct Delegate, I was not at the November Convention so I'll have to base my comments on the facts presented in Steve's story.

I placed the following comment on the Troy Eccentric story:

Obviously a married couple may not always agree on politics. Here's the key question that Steve may have failed to ask Mary: "Did you also place a McCain sign in front of your home?" Sure it would look stupid to have both signs. But, as a GOP precinct delegate, Mary should have known that placing the McCain sign next to the Obama sign would give credibility to her statement that "My lawn is shared property and my husband can have an independent life." If I had attended the GOP Convention last month, that would have been my question.

12/7/1941: The Attack at Pearl Harbor

With no warning the attacking planes came into sight over pearl harbor. At 7:55 AM, December 7, 1941 the first target was hit and by 9:45 AM it was all over. Behind them the Japanese left devastation as their aircraft carriers headed home to Japan. Over 2400 people died, hundreds of planes were destroyed, and a fleet containing eight battleships was ruined.

Auto Hearings - Hypocrisy 101

I couldn't agree more with these comments by Detroit News editorial cartoonist Henry Payne...

Last summer, Pennsylvania senator Bob Casey joined his Democratic colleagues in piling $85 billion in new regulatory costs on the Detroit Three by mandating a 40-percent fuel-efficiency increase by 2020. “The energy bill passed by the Senate takes an important step forward to increase our energy, economic, and environmental security,” said the senator. “And the CAFE standard increase contained in the bill is long overdue.” At this afternoon’s Senate Banking Committee hearings, Casey — unapologetic for his role in burdening the industry now before him seeking a handout — demanded quick passage of $34 billion in taxpayer money to save the Detroit companies from bankruptcy.

Christmas Lights Too Early?

I switched on the Christmas lights on our house on Thanksgiving evening. I felt a little guilty because I thought that I should wait until the first day of Advent which occurred a few days later.

However, after I read Pastor Paul McCain's blog posting, my guilty conscience was relieved.

Pastor McCain says...

"Bring Christmas on! Lets spend our time working to make sure the light of Christ shines in the darkness, for as often and as long as we possibly can shine it." Let's not react to the spirit of the age by presenting ourselves, and our faith, as a bunch of old church ladies, wagging our fingers and scolding people, doing all we can to confirm the stereotype that Christianity is all about making sure somebody, somewhere, is not having fun. I'm quite sure we can observe Advent well and properly while also using this time to witness boldly and joyfully of the reason why we observe Advent.
