Senator Obama to Campaign at Troy High School on Monday
While in Troy, I hope that Senator Obama will have time to observe what a marvelous City we have here in Troy. He can contrast it with the corruption and "machine" politics of Chicago and Detroit. In fact, why isn't he paying a visit to Detroit? And, why didn't he campaign in Michigan during the Presidential Primary in January?

Anuzis Comments on Detroit Chamber's Mackinac Conference
DETROIT CHAMBER...starts their meeting on Mackinac Island today as leaders from around the state gather to discuss policy issues. Attorney General Mike Cox, Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop and House Republican Leader Craig DeRoche led the Republican contingency on the island.
CHAMBER OPENING SESSION...JUST MORE OF THE SAME...they discussed "bi-partisanship" and the idea of looking for solutions that first appeared to all require bigger government, more revenues, which means more taxes. And oh yeah, by the way, there needs to be some structural reforms as well. I felt like I sat through a session of a failed Democratic Party Platform committee session where Governor Granholm was going to promise to "blow us away"...again. No one represented the taxpayers...the guys who pay the bills for all these great ideas.
If you rob Peter to pay Paul, you can usually count on Paul's support. Taxpayers beware.
BUSINESS LEADERS vs NGO'S...several times throughout the afternoon and evening the observation was made to "find" any entrepreneurs or job providers in the group. If it wasn't for the board members, the conference participants seem to reflect more and more those who need or want government or private sector support and/or more government and top down solutions. The taxpayers, job providers, and entrepreneurs were grossly under-represented.
Back in my former days as a staff person at the Michigan Chamber (over 20 years ago!), I was often dismayed by the big government preferences of the Detroit Regional Chamber.

Memorial Day 2008
...In Mike Spann’s gallantry resides a lesson for us to consider as we commemorate Memorial Day. While he died with honor, what is now incumbent upon us is to live with honor. By so doing, we will venerate his sacrifice, as well as the memory of countless men and women extending back to the Revolutionary War who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. How to live with honor is a path we must blaze each in our own personal way. Fortunately, wellsprings exist that we may draw upon for guidance. One of them is the example set by Mike Spann himself. As his wife, Shannon, poignantly recalled at his funeral in Arlington Cemetery, “Mike is a hero not because of the way he died, but because of the way he lived. Mike was prepared to give his life in Afghanistan because he already gave his life to us everyday at home.” In the soul of this one warrior we can discern the meaning of Memorial Day...

Economist Sees Good Prospects for Recovery in 2009
At this event, CenCorp also sponsors the Economic Issues Luncheon. The guest speaker was Federal Reserve Economist Dr. Sam Kahan. Kahan said he foresees slow growth — or perhaps even a small contraction — in U.S. GDP in the remaining three quarters of the year, followed by an expansion at a modest 2.5 percent pace in 2009.

NBC News "Edits" President Bush
MEGYN KELLY: The White House is not at all happy with NBC News. In an unusual move, the Administration is calling the network's story reporting on its recent interview with President Bush, "utterly misleading and irresponsible." The controversy is over the President's answer to a question asked by an NBC reporter about the President's policies when it comes to negotiating with Iran and Barack Obama. The White House says there is a difference between what the President said to that reporter and what NBC viewers actually saw. Here's the interview as it appeared on NBC Nightly News. Happy Mothers Day 2008!
On Mother's Day, we honor the grace, wisdom, and strength of our mothers, and we celebrate the special bonds shared between mothers and their children.
Mothers work tirelessly to help their children build healthy and successful lives. Through their positive examples and countless acts of kindness, mothers teach the values of generosity and compassion and the importance of family and community. As President Ronald Reagan said, "From our mothers, we first learn about values and caring and the difference between right and wrong." By providing a nurturing environment where their children can grow in confidence and character, mothers lay the foundation for the next generation of Americans to realize their full potential.
Our Nation is grateful for the sacrifices mothers make every day and for the unconditional love they give their children. We are especially thankful for the mothers who support their sons and daughters serving in our Armed Forces and for the mothers who bring honor to the uniform of the United States by defending our freedom at home and abroad.
Every child blessed with a mother's love has been given one of life's great gifts. On this Mother's Day, we recognize the extraordinary contributions America's mothers make to their children, their families, and our country.
To honor mothers, the Congress, by a joint resolution approved May 8, 1914, as amended (38 Stat. 770), has designated the second Sunday in May each year as "Mother's Day" and has requested the President to call for its appropriate observance. May God bless mothers across America on this special day and throughout the year.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 11, 2008, as Mother's Day. I encourage all Americans to show their gratitude and love to mothers for making a difference in the lives of their children, families, and communities. I call upon citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eighth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-second.
GEORGE W. BUSH

Kimberley A. Strassel: A Louisiana Lesson for the GOP
Here are her concluding remarks...
...With Democrats actively recruiting conservative candidates, it's no longer good enough for the GOP names to fall back on cultural credentials, to demagogue immigration, or to simply promise lower taxes. Voters care about the size of government, but they are equally worried about the cost of doctor visits and gas prices. The winners will be those who explain the merits of a private health-care reform, who talk about vouchers, who push for energy production. And given its reputation on ethics, it's clear the GOP has to recruit Mr. Cleans, who also make voters believe they are more interested in solving problems than bringing home pork. Mr. Jenkins's defeat says little about how Republicans will fare in defining Mr. Obama or local competitors this fall. It says plenty about how the GOP continues to define itself, and why it remains in trouble.

Strassel on Indiana Taxes and the Presidential Election
Here are a couple of excerpts...
As Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton pick through this state's primary results come Tuesday, the last person on their minds will be Bart Peterson. Yet the Peterson ghost may well come looking for the eventual Democratic nominee. Mr. Peterson was, until recently, the popular Democratic mayor of this fine city. Then voters went to the polls in November and threw him out in favor of an unknown and underfunded Republican. It was among last year's biggest political upsets, and marked the first time in 40 years Indianapolis voters had canned a sitting mayor. The source of their anger? Taxes. In particular, the county's income tax rate, which Mr. Peterson raised to 1.65% from 1%. Coming into an election year with a 75% approval rating and a mountain of campaign cash, Mr. Peterson thought he could risk the tax-hiker label. He felt further bolstered by his argument that the tax was earmarked for crime fighting. He squeaked his levy through in July; by November he'd been washed out on a tide of outrage. Indiana isn't alone in its tax discontent. As the economy has slowed and home values have slipped, state and local governments have been raising taxes to cover revenue shortfalls. This has squeezed middle-class households, just as surely as higher gas and food prices, or rising medical costs. Voters last year responded by shooting down tax-and-spend proposals in Oregon, New Jersey, Iowa, Washington and North Carolina. Voters in the Hoosier State are near revolt, last year throwing out 21 mayors in primaries, many for failing to stem out-of-control property taxes...
...Republican nominee John McCain's challenge is to bring the risk home to voters. This will involve moving beyond the broad Republican antitax line into a more specific message, one that outlines the dangers of any tax hikes at a time of economic stress. The campaign has started to do this; staffers no longer publicly talk about the need to "make permanent the Bush tax cuts," a line that falls flat with voters of all stripes. Instead, Mr. McCain is linking higher taxes with wasteful spending, and stressing that Democrats are threatening the biggest tax increases in history, ones that are certain to hit average voters in some form or another. The evidence from Indiana is that more than a few voters are ripe to hear that message.
