William F. Buckley, Jr., R.I.P.

One person who helped influence my political philosophy was William F. Buckley, Jr.   Buckley passed into life earlier today.

It used to drive my brother "nuts" when I would watch Buckley's "Firing Line" on PBS.  I only saw Buckley in person one time when he debated Zolton Ferency at the University of Michigan in the mid-1970s.  Zolton didn't stand a chance!

A Public Input Workshop for the development of the City of Troy Master Plan was held last night, Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at the MSU Management Education Center. I was there from approximately 6:30 to 7:15. The turnout was fairly high. It was well organized and a good investment of time.

Bruce Fealk Arrested In Troy

Democratic Party activist Bruce Fealk was arrested Monday night by the Troy Police for failing to comply with police orders to turn off his camera equipment in a room rented by the Troy-Clawson and Oakland County Republican Forum.

According to Chetly Zarko:
Fealk wanted to videotape at a Republican event and the organizers offered him (and all others were asked not to videotape at the beginning of the event - we didn't videotape either) an opportunity to stay and listen but not to tape. Fealk refused their request, refused the request of the Troy Community Center director after he explained the room was rented, and continued taping for several minutes when the director called the police. Fealk then argued with police and attempted to continue taping, and was promptly handcuffed and detained.

Athens High Athletic Booster Concession Manager Arrested

From the Troy Police...
February 26, 2008

During the course of an on-going investigation involving reported discrepancies in  Troy Athens High School Athletic Booster’s Club funds,  Ms. Margaret Ellen Bazin, 46 years old, from Troy has been charged in a three count felony warrant for embezzlement.  The specific funds out of which the charges arise involve the Booster Club’s concessions, as well as a Booster Club fund raising event called the “Swim and Jog.”

As a member of the Boosters, Ms. Bazin managed Booster Club sponsored concessions at Athens High School.  The concessions are run by the Booster Club with profits going to support that organization’s activities.  The investigation determined that Ms. Bazin used concessions account funds to make just over $2000.00 in personal purchases.  (Count I) In addition, the investigation revealed that just over $2000.00 in funds that were turned over to Ms. Bazin from the Booster Club to be deposited into the concessions account are missing.  (Count II)  Ms. Bazin was one of the organizers of a Booster Club fund raiser entitled the “Swim and Jog.”  In her capacity with that event, she took in pledge monies from participants.  During the course of that event, students and others volunteered their time to jog or swim laps to raise money for the Booster Club, as well as their specific sport.  The investigation revealed that she turned in approximately $1800.00 less than what she collected. (Count III)

Each count carries with it up to 5 years in prison and/or a $10,000.00 fine or three times the amount embezzled, whichever is greater.

Ms. Bazin was arrested by Troy officers at her home on Thursday, February 21st .  She was arraigned in front of Troy 52-4 District Court Judge Dennis Drury on the 22nd where she appeared with an attorney.  She stood mute.  She received a $50,000.00 personal bond, with a stipulation that she has no contact with the Troy Athens High Booster Club.  Her pre-exam conference is set for March 6th in front of Judge Drury in Troy’s 52-4 District Court at 8:30 a.m.  A mug shot is attached.

This investigation is on-going.  Anyone with information specific to Ms. Bazin or other relevant information who has not yet spoken with an investigator is asked to contact Troy Detective David Nordstrom at 248-680-7283.

New Customer Solutions Department is Launched to Streamline Citizen Assistance

From the City's Community Affairs Department...
The City of Troy, committed to achieving the highest quality of customer satisfaction, announces the establishment of its new Customer Solutions Department. The department is comprised of existing personnel and is designed to be the first point of contact for citizens to obtain assistance from the City of Troy.

“Our residents give us consistent positive feedback on our annual customer satisfaction survey, but we know we can be doing even more to streamline and simplify interaction with our services,” City Manager Phil Nelson said. “The mission of this newly established department is to exceed customer expectations by providing accurate information in an efficient and effective manner. These readily accessible customer service professionals are focused on facilitating and resolving customer concerns, as well as individual and community requests.”

The functions for the new department include being the City’s call center and providing general information and assistance regarding Municipal Offices, City Services, Oakland County, community organizations, District Court and Local and State government. Other functions include responding to customer service requests and concerns -- or directing them to the appropriate department -- within 24 hours on the next business day of the initial request.

“The department is also charged with maintaining and monitoring call records to report trends to City administration and allow for more effective strategic planning as the City strives to meet citizen needs,” Nelson said.

The Customer Solutions Department is coordinated by Beth Tashnick, administrative aide, functioning in the City Manager’s office. The Customer Solutions Department is located at 500 W. Big Beaver Rd. Fore more information call 248.524.3337 or e-mail CustomerSolutions@troymi.gov. A representative is available Monday-Friday, 8 am-4:30 pm.

Update on Comerica Bank Robbery

Investigators have obtained photographs of what is believed to be the suspect vehicle in Wednesday’s bank robbery in Troy. (Original release reprinted below.) It appears the suspect parked in the far northeast corner of an adjacent office complex parking lot. From there it appears he walked to the bank, which is to the north across a field. After the robbery he apparently ran east into the wooded area east of the bank and east of the lot he had parked in. He emerged shortly thereafter, got into his car and drove away. The area in the woods where his clothing and weapon were recovered is just east of where he parked his car. Attached is a photo of what is believed to be the suspect vehicle as it entered the lot in question. It is believed to be an early 90’s four door GM model. Possibilities include a Buick Century, Chevy Celebrity, Olds Cutlass Sierra, or Chevy Lumina. It appears to be silver, light gray, or Champaign in color. It has a sun roof, a spoiler on the trunk, and the front driver’s side wheel is either missing a hubcap or is a spare. There is video available of the car driving through the lot in question that is clearer than the still photos. Please contact us if interested. Comerica Bank officials are offering a $2000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest of this suspect. Additional reward money is available through 1-800-SPEAKUP. (Crime Stoppers)

Comerica Bank Robbery

At 10:06 a.m. this morning Troy officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Comerica Bank located at 1494 John R. Upon arrival the suspect was gone. The investigation revealed a white male dressed in a black and gray hooded jacket, black pants, black shoes, with a blue ski mask pulled up over his face entered the bank, pulled out a handgun, racked it, and announced a robbery. He brandished the gun, pointing it at tellers and bystanders. He handed a plastic CVS shopping bag to one of the tellers and ordered her to fill it with money and not any of the “pink stuff.” When she returned the bag after placing an undisclosed amount of currency inside, he ran out of the bank. A Police K-9 Unit tracked the suspect south along John R and then east into a wooded area behind a neighboring office complex. Just inside the wooded area, officers recovered the suspect’s clothing as well as a black air soft pistol. The pistol had the pink plastic barrel device removed making it appear as a real handgun. Clothing included the face mask which is a blue knit hat with a white “DTE Energy” logo; a black and gray hooded jacket with red lining inside the hood, a “P. Miller Denim” logo across the front in gray and red lettering; a black long sleeved pull over shirt; black pants; and a black buckle over pair of shoes. No one was injured in the incident. Witnesses described the suspect as sounding younger. He appears left handed, as he used that hand when he pulled, brandished, and later concealed the gun in his left waistline area.

There is a short video of the robbery, however the suspect’s face is covered by the knit hat and the hood on the jacket is pulled up covering his head.  There are still photos available of his clothing.  A still photo of the suspect running out of the bank, as well as several photos of his clothing and the gun are attached.

SOCRRA Scavenging Report

Have you seen someone taking cans, bottles or newspapers from your recycling bin? According to SOCRRA...
That's called scavenging, and it's illegal in the SOCRRA communities.

How Does Recyclables Theft Affect Our Community?  Revenue from the sale of recyclables collected by City contractors is used to offset the cost of collecting these materials. When recyclable materials are stolen, potential market revenue is lost and your fees for weekly recyclables collection may need to be increased. Theft also discourages residents from recycling, defeating the goals of the City's curbside recycling program.

To report scavenging activities in your neighborhood, fill out the form at http://www.socrra.org/scavenging.html.

You can also report on scavenging activities by calling the City of Troy at 248-619-7266 248-524-3399.

NRO: Truce Between McCain and Conservatives

Good editorial in National Review Online...
...Conservatives and McCain should neither pretend that we have no differences nor obsess about those differences. We should instead work on the common task of building a center-right majority in this election year and future ones, each appreciating that the other will play a different role in that task. So we ask the senator, and his conservative supporters and critics: Any takers?

City Journal Article: Time to Rechristen SCHIP

According to Dr. David Gratzer:
In January, Congress tried and failed for the second time to override President Bush’s veto of a Democratic proposal to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), a 10-year-old initiative that aimed to extend coverage to low-income kids. Congressional leaders promise another attempt in the coming weeks. The rhetoric has been hot: Republicans claim that the Democratic proposal would lead to socialized medicine by creating a middle-class entitlement; Democrats claim that their proposal is vital to poor kids. Unfortunately, this ongoing Washington power struggle will do little to strengthen America’s torn health-care safety net...

Update on Shooting Rampage at Kirkwood City Council

According to CNN, Mike Lynch died from his injuries. Mike was always a friendly fellow with all kinds of ideas and advice. He was an example of a public servant. Please pray for his family.
The others who lost their lives were Council Member Connie Karr, Public Works Director Kenneth Yost, and Kirkwood Police Officers Tom Ballman and Bill Biggs.

Why is it that CNN (and other media outlets) features a picture of the murderer on its web page instead of the victims? Why does the news media glorify sick and evil people?

I’m placing a picture of Mike on my blog to remember him for his service.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch: 6 dead in shooting rampage at Kirkwood City Council

When I was still on the Troy City Council, I served with one of the shooting victims on a committee of the National League of Cities. I’m unable to determine whether Councilmember Michael Lynch has survived the attack. Please keep him and all of the other innocent victims in your prayers.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the murderer...

…fired at City Attorney John Hessel, who told McNichols he fended the attacker off by throwing chairs…

I have to wonder what the outcome would have been if the City Attorney (or some other city official) had been carrying a revolver? Would lives have been saved?

Romney to Withdraw

Mitt Romney quote from Byron York at National Review Online...
... I disagree with Senator McCain on a number of issues, as you know. But I agree with him on doing whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq, on finding and executing Osama bin Laden, and on eliminating Al Qaeda and terror. If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror. This is not an easy decision for me. I hate to lose. My family, my friends and our supporters... many of you right here in this room... have given a great deal to get me where I have a shot at becoming President. If this were only about me, I would go on. But I entered this race because I love America, and because I love America, I feel I must now stand aside, for our party and for our country.

Happy Chinese New Year
